The Introductory Level guides children as they take their first steps into the world of reading, starting with the fundamental pictograph "山" (mountain) and embarking on a journey of character recognition.
The 100 characters featured at this level are not only among the most frequently used in modern Chinese but are also closely tied to children's daily lives and commonly appear in children's literature. The characters children learn can be spotted in their everyday surroundings, helping them naturally realize that learning to read is both purposeful and fun.
This set of 100 characters includes 22 radicals as well as commonly used nouns, verbs, particles, and adjectives. Starting from Lesson 2, children begin by recognizing short phrases and quickly progress to reading complete sentences—a process that mirrors the natural way children develop language skills.
A key feature of the Introductory Level curriculum is its design, which encourages natural, repeated practice. Through this repetition, children effortlessly master these 100 characters, paving the way for them to read stories and poems independently. The *Basic Chinese Characters 500* series, which begins with this Introductory Level, covers a total of approximately 2,800 characters.
BEGINNING READER starts with the most frequently used Chinese words and characters, and get the child reading sentences from the very start. The stories are centred around a child’s everyday life. Among this first set of 100 characters, 22 of them are common radicals, laying down a solid foundation for the child’s understanding of the Chinese writing system. The child learns to read in a natural and fun way.
The 5 books of BEGINNING READER contain around 2800 characters. The design of the course embeds numerous repetitions of the characters, in tune with the child’s natural way of learning. Once the child learns these 100 characters, they will be able to read stories and poems on their own.
